Decisions, decisions ........

I retired over 2 years ago yet I am still having to make decisions. OK, maybe my recent decisions may not have been as critical as when I was a controller, or being a course verifier at the Air Traffic College - even so, they are critical to me at this time in my life.

So, apart from what time to leave the comfort of my bed, or, what to have, or where to eat, my breakfast - all important stuff - what else have I had to decide on?

This is supposed to be a photography blog, so on to the topic. I like taking photos. Here in Lima there are so many opportunities to take pictures, so why am I not going out and doing just that. The issue is more about image than pictures - that's my personal image - yes I have lost weight and I eat better and dress better, that's not the issue. I have a full frame Canon camera with a battery pack fitted and use 'L' series lenses, I'm over 6 feet tall with some red hair left and light coloured skin. The average height for peruvian men is 5ft 6inches, the majority of them have lots of dark or black hair, their skin tone is darker than mine, very few photographers that I have seen use full frame cameras and even fewer use a battery pack ( I saw one man yesterday using just that combination - the first in over 2 years).

So, my image problem - if I want to take pictures of the local area, people, everyday happenings I really need to be as unobtrusive as possible. I decided I like my hair and skin colour - so leave that alone. I like my height - so no operation to shorten my legs - it would also cost a fortune in new trousers. So you can see why I think my recent decisions are important. So, my physical image is remaining as it is - what else can I change?

The camera attracts a lot of attention. A couple of weeks ago Marlene and her sisters went out for the evening. I decided to take the camera for a walk in the same area. The location is a shopping area with restaurants built into the side of the cliff and overlooking the Pacific Ocean - some of you know Larcomar. I knew what and where I wanted to photograph.

I was waiting patiently for a couple to finish taking some pictures with their point and shoot camera. I stepped into the same spot. There was a security man close by, he had not bothered with the couple using a point and shoot camera. Haa - I took my camera out of the bag and, before I had switched it on, he was walking over to me. "You can't take pictures of the shops" he said,  "OK" I said. The previous couple had been taking photos of all the shops and he had been watching them. Me, I must be a professional with a camera like that so I need telling the rules!

The decision was finally made last Sunday. What a relief ..........

I have written blogs before and started with all the good intentions. I've updated them every few days - then every few weeks - then maybe update them - you know how it goes.  This blog will be different!!

I'll update it maybe sometime and, if that is in a few days - bonus! The main reason for the 'maybe update the blog' is that I want to go through my thought processes and set-ups when I take pictures. I'm never sure when i will be taking something new so I'm not going to make any promises about updates - just to promise you that it will be updated at some point.

What I will be doing is putting the new images in one of the galleries, then writing about it here - though it probably won't be every new photo that goes into the galleries - we will have to wait and see.

Cheers for now,

Mike
